iPhone 12 in 2026: Common Problems, Repairs and Whether to Upgrade

The iPhone 12 family arrived in late 2020, so most of these phones are now between four and six years old. Many are still working hard as daily phones, hand-me-downs or backup devices, but age catches up with every phone, and Singapore’s heat and humidity tend to speed up wear on batteries, seals and charging ports. This guide covers what the four models have in common, where Apple’s software support stands, the faults we see most often and how to decide between repairing and upgrading.

The four iPhone 12 models at a glance

• iPhone 12 mini – 5.4-inch display, aluminium frame, dual 12MP cameras (Wide and Ultra Wide).
• iPhone 12 – 6.1-inch display, aluminium frame, the same dual cameras as the mini.
• iPhone 12 Pro – 6.1-inch display, stainless steel frame, triple 12MP cameras with a 2x Telephoto camera and a LiDAR Scanner.
• iPhone 12 Pro Max – 6.7-inch display, stainless steel frame, triple cameras with a 2.5x Telephoto camera, LiDAR Scanner and sensor-shift optical image stabilisation.

According to Apple’s technical specifications, all four share the same core hardware, so most of the advice below applies to every model:

• A14 Bionic chip, still capable of everyday apps, messaging, banking and streaming.
• Super Retina XDR OLED display with a Ceramic Shield front – tougher than earlier iPhone glass, but not unbreakable.
• MagSafe magnetic wireless charging up to 15W, plus Qi wireless charging up to 7.5W.
• 5G – the first iPhone generation to support it.
• Lightning connector, not USB-C.
• Face ID and an IP68 rating (maximum depth of 6 metres for up to 30 minutes, under laboratory conditions).

Is the iPhone 12 still supported in 2026?

Yes. As of October 2026, Apple lists the iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max as compatible with iOS 27, the current version of iOS (see Apple’s iOS page). Apple does not publish an end date for software support, so nobody can say exactly when the iPhone 12 will stop receiving new versions. For now it can run the current release and receive security updates, which is the main reason it remains a sensible phone to keep using. Keep it updated through Settings > General > Software Update.

Common iPhone 12 problems on a four- to six-year-old phone

Most of the issues we see are not design faults. They are the normal result of years of charging, pocket lint, drops and Singapore’s climate. Apple says iPhones are designed for ambient temperatures between 0°C and 35°C, and that using a device in very hot conditions can permanently shorten battery life. A phone left on a car dashboard, used for long navigation sessions in the sun or charged under a pillow will age faster than one kept cool.

Battery wear

The battery is the part most likely to need attention. Apple states that batteries in iPhone 14 models and earlier are designed to retain 80 percent of their original capacity at 500 complete charge cycles under ideal conditions. A phone charged daily for four years or more has usually gone well past that point. Typical signs include:

• The phone no longer lasts a full day.
• Unexpected shutdowns, often when the battery still shows some charge.
• Apps feeling slower, because iOS may apply performance management after an unexpected shutdown.
• The back panel or screen lifting slightly – stop using the phone and have it checked if you notice swelling.

Go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging to see the Maximum Capacity figure and any service message. If iOS reports that battery health is significantly degraded, a phone battery replacement is usually the most worthwhile repair you can make on an older iPhone.

Cracked or failing screens

After several years of drops, many iPhone 12 screens have cracks, dead touch areas or OLED damage such as lines and green or black patches. A cracked screen also lets moisture in more easily, so it is worth fixing sooner rather than later.

Part quality matters. Apple notes that non-genuine displays can cause Multi-Touch problems, incorrect colour calibration, True Tone not working, lower maximum brightness and unintended battery drain. On iPhone 11 models and later, Settings > General > About > Parts and Service History shows whether a replaced display is listed as Genuine or as an Unknown Part, and Apple says an Unknown part might affect trade-in value. Ask what type of part will be used before you agree to an iPhone screen repair.

Charging port problems

The Lightning port collects lint and dust over the years, and humidity can encourage corrosion on the contacts. Symptoms include a cable that will not click in firmly, charging that only works at a certain angle, or charging that starts and stops. A careful professional clean is often enough; if the port is worn or corroded, a charging port repair will usually fix it. MagSafe or Qi charging is a handy workaround in the meantime, and a quick way to tell whether the port or the battery is at fault.

Camera faults

Common camera problems include blurry or shaky photos (often a damaged stabilisation module after a drop), a cracked lens cover, dust under the lens cover, or a black screen in the Camera app. These can usually be resolved with a phone camera repair. Heat can also temporarily disable the flash and other camera features, so let an overheated phone cool down before assuming it is faulty.

Face ID notes

Face ID relies on the TrueDepth camera system at the top of the display. If it stops working after a drop, a spill or a screen replacement, the cause is often damage to these front sensors or their flex cables. Face ID components are matched to the phone’s logic board, which makes this one of the more complex iPhone 12 repairs, and it is not always possible. Before any screen repair, ask how the TrueDepth parts will be protected, and test Face ID before you leave.

Water resistance does not last forever

The IP68 rating was measured when the phone was new. Apple itself states that splash, water and dust resistance are not permanent conditions and might decrease as a result of normal wear. After four to six years, plus drops or previous repairs, treat an iPhone 12 as if it has no water resistance at all.

If the phone does get wet, power it off, do not charge it and have it inspected quickly. Corrosion can keep developing on the logic board for days after the phone seems dry, and serious cases may need phone motherboard repair to restore the phone or recover its data.

Repair or replace? An honest guide

Repair is usually worth it when:

• The phone has one clear fault, such as a worn battery, cracked screen or loose charging port, and everything else works well.
• You are happy with its speed, camera and storage for the way you use it.
• It is going to a family member who mainly needs calls, messaging and a few apps.

Replacing is usually the better choice when:

• Several parts have failed at once, for example the screen, battery and Face ID together.
• The phone has serious liquid damage or a logic board fault.
• You regularly run out of storage or need features the iPhone 12 hardware does not have.
• You would rather move to a newer model that should receive software updates for longer.

Get a proper diagnosis first. Once you know what is actually wrong, you can weigh the repair against the value of the phone and the cost of a replacement. If you decide to upgrade, a well-checked used iPhone can be a good middle ground.

Before you trade in, sell or repair: back up your data

Whatever you decide, back up the phone first. Apple offers three ways to do this:

• iCloud – Settings > [your name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup, then Back Up Now while on Wi-Fi.
• Mac – connect with a Lightning cable, open Finder, select the iPhone and back up all data to the Mac. Encrypt the backup if you want saved passwords and Health data included.
• Windows PC – use the Apple Devices app (or iTunes on older Windows versions) over a cable.

Can the iPhone 12 run iOS 27?

Yes. Apple lists all four iPhone 12 models as compatible with iOS 27. Apple has not announced when support will end, so check its compatibility list each year when a new iOS version is released.

How do I know if my iPhone 12 needs a new battery?

Check Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging. A low Maximum Capacity, a message saying battery health is significantly degraded, or unexpected shutdowns are strong signs. Short battery life can also be caused by apps or settings, so a quick diagnostic check is worthwhile before replacing anything.

Is my iPhone 12 still water resistant after a screen replacement?

Do not rely on it. Water resistance already weakens with normal wear, and any repair that opens the phone disturbs the original seals. A good repairer will fit new adhesive, but it is still safest to keep an older iPhone 12 away from water.
