We’re an independent repair shop. We fix keyboards on MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models from 2015 on, from a single stuck key to a full keyboard replacement. It’s free to ask for a quote on WhatsApp. Send the model name from Apple menu > About This Mac, a note of which keys are affected, and whether anything was spilled.

Signs your MacBook keyboard needs repair

  • Sticky or stiff keys that don’t press or spring back cleanly.
  • Double letters (“hhello”) or letters that don’t appear at all.
  • A dead row or group of keys. This can point to a damaged keyboard or ribbon cable.
  • Backlight problems. Some keys lit and others dark, or no backlight at all.
  • After a spill. Switch the MacBook off and unplug it. Don’t try to type until it has been checked. See liquid damage.

Which keyboard does your MacBook have?

The keyboard type decides how we repair it.

  • Butterfly keyboard. Used on the 12-inch MacBook (2015 to 2017), the Retina 13-inch MacBook Air (2018 and 2019) and the 13 and 15-inch MacBook Pro (2016 to 2019). Its very short key travel makes it sensitive to dust and crumbs. Read about the butterfly keyboard.
  • Magic Keyboard (scissor). Used on the 16-inch MacBook Pro (2019), the MacBook Air from 2020 on including every M-series Air, the 13-inch MacBook Pro from 2020 on, and the 14 and 16-inch MacBook Pro models from 2021 on.
  • Older scissor keyboard. Used on the 2015 and 2017 MacBook Air and the Retina MacBook Pro (2015).

On most MacBooks from 2016 on, the keyboard is fixed into the top case rather than screwed in on its own. A full replacement means taking the whole MacBook apart, which is why we check first whether a single key can be fixed.

What we do

Check each key

We test every key and the backlight, and look for signs of a spill under the keys.

Clean or fix single keys

One or two sticky keys can sometimes be cleaned or have the keycap or switch replaced.

Full keyboard replacement

If several keys fail, we replace the keyboard and test every key before you collect.

Spills

We open the MacBook, clean liquid and corrosion, and check whether the spill reached the logic board.

Trackpad check

Keyboard and trackpad sit close together. We check the trackpad clicks and tracks normally too.

Your data stays put

Keyboard work doesn’t touch your storage, so your files normally stay as they are.

What affects the cost

  • Your model and keyboard type. A butterfly keyboard in a 2016 to 2019 MacBook Pro is a bigger job than a single keycap.
  • One key or the whole keyboard. Fixing a single key costs less than replacing the keyboard.
  • Keyboard layout. US English layouts are the easiest to find. Other layouts can be harder to source.
  • Spill damage. Liquid that reached the board adds work.

Send us your model and a short video of the faulty keys on WhatsApp for a quote.

Parts and warranty

3-month warranty, OEM parts with original quality. We fit OEM keyboards matched to your model and layout, and test every key before you collect.

Before you bring it in

  • Back up. If the MacBook still turns on, run Time Machine or check iCloud has synced. See 3-2-1 backup.
  • Activation Lock. If Find My is on, the MacBook is tied to an Apple Account. We need you, or the account owner, on hand if the Mac asks for it. We don’t bypass Activation Lock.
  • Company MacBooks. If the Mac is managed through MDM, check with your IT team first. See MacBook repair for more on company Macs.

Still under AppleCare? Check with Apple first

If your MacBook is under Apple’s one-year limited warranty or an active AppleCare plan, check with Apple before you book any repair. The fault may be covered, and an independent repair could affect that cover. See Apple’s Mac laptop repair page. If the cover has ended, or the damage isn’t covered, we’re happy to help.

Questions people ask

Can you replace just one key?

Often, yes, if the key mechanism isn’t damaged. Butterfly parts are fragile, so we’ll tell you honestly if a single-key fix is likely to last.

Is Apple’s Keyboard Service Program still running?

No. Our butterfly keyboard page explains that Apple’s programme has ended, so butterfly keyboard faults now need a paid repair.

How do I know which MacBook I have?

Go to Apple menu > About This Mac. The model name and year show there. You can also find the model number on the underside of the case.

Will I lose my data?

No. A keyboard repair doesn’t touch your storage. Back up anyway, as you would before any repair.
