Liquid Damage

What a spill does inside a laptop, why it keeps getting worse after it dries, and what to do in the first hour.

Liquid damage is harm to a laptop caused by water, coffee, tea or other drinks reaching its internal parts. The liquid can short-circuit live components straight away, and the minerals and sugar it leaves behind cause corrosion over the following days and weeks. Quick power-off and professional cleaning give the best chance of saving the laptop and its data.

How it works

A spill does damage in two stages. The first happens in seconds. If the laptop is on, liquid bridges contacts on the motherboard that should never touch. Current flows where it should not, and small parts can burn out.

The second stage is slower and is the one most people miss. Even clean tap water carries minerals. Coffee, tea and soft drinks add sugar and acid. When the liquid dries, it leaves a residue on the board. With power from the battery still present, that residue keeps reacting with the metal. Green or white crust builds up under chips and around connectors. A laptop that seemed fine the day after a spill can fail a week later.

That is why “it dried out and works” is not the end of the story. Drying removes the water but not the residue.

The first hour

StepWhy
1. Unplug the charger and hold the power button to shut downRemoving power stops short circuits
2. Disconnect USB drives, docks and cablesStops power feeding back in, and protects the accessories
3. Open it into a tent shape, keys facing down, on a towelLets liquid drain out instead of deeper in
4. Wipe the outside gently. Do not shake itShaking spreads liquid across the board
5. Note what was spilled and roughly how muchSugary or acidic drinks need faster cleaning
6. Get it to a repairer the same day if you canThe battery inside keeps corrosion going

Do not switch it back on to “check”. Do not use a hair dryer, which can push liquid further in and overheat parts. Rice does not remove residue either.

The data-first approach

For a business laptop, the files usually matter more than the hardware. A careful repairer will disconnect the battery, clean the board, and aim to get the original board working long enough to recover data before any part replacement. That matters most on laptops where storage is soldered to the board, such as recent MacBooks, because a board swap loses that data.

What it means for your business

  • Put the first-hour steps in your staff IT guide. The first few minutes matter most.
  • Make sure work is saved to cloud storage or a backup, so a spill costs a laptop, not a project.
  • Have the BitLocker key or FileVault details ready, since board work may trigger them.
  • Ask the repairer to tell you before replacing the board, so you can decide on data recovery first.

Common questions

My laptop still works after a spill. Do I need to do anything?

Yes. Back up your files now, then have it opened and inspected. Residue can corrode the board slowly, and failure may come days or weeks later.

Is liquid damage covered by the laptop warranty?

Standard manufacturer warranties generally exclude accidental damage, including spills. Some business laptops are sold with separate accidental damage cover. Check your purchase records.

Can the data be saved if the laptop will not turn on?

Often, yes. If the storage is removable, it can be read in another machine with the right encryption key. If it is soldered, the board usually needs repair first. The sooner the laptop is cleaned, the better the odds.

Coffee on a company laptop?

Power it off and bring it in. We put your data first.
