Before you send a company laptop for repair

  • Back up anything that isn’t already synced to the cloud. See 3-2-1 backup.
  • Have the BitLocker recovery key ready for Windows laptops. Board or BIOS work can trigger a request for it.
  • Ask your IT admin about any BIOS password or Activation Lock. We don’t bypass BIOS passwords, Activation Lock or BitLocker. Your IT admin, the original buyer or the manufacturer needs to remove them.
  • Check the warranty. If the laptop has an onsite warranty, use that first.

Will you see our company data?

Most repairs don’t need us to sign in. When we do need access to test the laptop, we’ll ask you first. For sensitive machines, give us a test account or wait while we test.

Repair or replace?

As a rough guide, if the repair costs more than about half the price of a suitable new laptop, or the laptop is past its useful life for that role, replacing it usually makes more sense. We’ll tell you honestly. See IT procurement.
