What screen damage looks like

• Cracks or spreading ink. Usually from a drop or from closing the lid on something small, like an earphone.
• Lines. Coloured or white lines across the picture, often after a knock or pressure on the lid.
• Flicker or a blank screen at certain angles. Often the cable, not the panel. See below.
• Uneven backlight. Bright patches along the bottom edge, sometimes called the “stage light” effect, then a dark screen as the lid opens wider.
• Dark patches or no picture. The MacBook still chimes or lights the keyboard, but the screen stays dark. Connect an external monitor to check whether the rest of the MacBook works.

Why MacBook screens are usually replaced as a whole

On most MacBook models, the Retina display is built as one sealed unit. The glass, the panel and the backlight are bonded together in the lid. That means a cracked screen usually needs the whole display assembly replaced, not just the glass. It costs more than a glass-only fix, but the result is cleaner and more reliable.

When it’s the cable, not the screen

The screen connects to the logic board through a thin display flex cable that bends every time you open the lid. On some models it wears out over the years. The signs are flicker, lines or a dark screen that change as you move the lid. We check the cable and the board before we recommend a new screen, so you don’t pay for a part you don’t need.

A note on True Tone

True Tone adjusts the screen’s colour to the light around you. After a screen replacement, True Tone may not be available on some models. Your screen will still work normally. Ask us about your model before we start.

• Back up if you can. Plug in an external monitor if the screen is too damaged to see.
• Note the model. It’s under Apple menu > About This Mac, or printed on the base.
• Check with Apple first if the MacBook is still under warranty or AppleCare.
