Battery “Service Recommended”

The macOS warning that your MacBook battery has worn down or is not working normally.

Battery “Service Recommended” is a battery health status in macOS. Apple says it means the battery holds less charge than when it was new, or is not functioning normally. The Mac is still safe to use, but you can expect shorter battery life, and a battery replacement is the usual fix.

How it works

Every lithium-ion battery slowly loses capacity as it is charged and used. macOS keeps track of this and reports one of two statuses: Normal, meaning the battery is working as expected, or Service Recommended. On older Macs and older versions of macOS, you may see Replace Soon, Replace Now or Service Battery instead.

A key measure is the cycle count. One cycle is using 100 percent of the battery’s capacity, which can be spread over several charges. Using half the battery one day and half the next counts as one cycle. Apple says its notebook batteries are designed to retain up to 80 percent of their original capacity at their maximum cycle count. For most MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models from 2016 onwards, including all Apple Silicon models, that limit is 1,000 cycles.

How to check your battery

What to checkWhere to find it
Battery health statusApple menu > System Settings > Battery, then look at Battery Health (System Preferences on older macOS)
Cycle countHold Option, click the Apple menu, choose System Information, then Hardware > Power. Look under Battery Information
Older MacsHold Option and click the battery icon in the menu bar

Apple advises relying on the macOS battery health report rather than third-party apps, which may be inaccurate. If charging seems to pause at around 80 percent, that is often Optimised Battery Charging protecting the battery, not a fault.

When to act

  • Service Recommended, but battery life is fine for you: you can keep using the Mac and plan the replacement.
  • Battery drains fast or the Mac shuts down suddenly: book a battery replacement.
  • Trackpad clicks poorly, the case bulges or the Mac rocks on a desk: stop using it and get it checked. This can be a swollen battery, which is a safety issue.

What it means for your business

Battery wear is predictable, so it can be planned for. Check battery health and cycle counts during routine maintenance, or pull them from your MDM if it reports them. Replacing a battery on a three-year-old MacBook is often far cheaper than replacing the Mac, and it can add useful years to the device. Back up before any battery job.

Common questions

Is it safe to keep using a MacBook that says Service Recommended?

Apple says yes. You will get shorter battery life. The exception is a battery that has swollen, which should be checked straight away.

How many cycles should a MacBook battery last?

Most MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models from 2016 onwards are rated for 1,000 cycles. Some much older models are rated for 300 or 500. Apple lists the figure for each model on its support site.

Can Service Recommended appear at a low cycle count?

Yes. The status reflects how the battery is actually performing, not just its cycle count. Heat, age and a faulty cell can all trigger it early. If your Mac is still under warranty or AppleCare, check your coverage first.

Battery not lasting the day?

See MacBook, MacBook Air or MacBook Pro battery replacement.
