Display Flex Cable & “Flexgate”

A thin cable in the hinge that wears out, causing the “stage light” glow and then a dark screen on some MacBook Pro models.

Flexgate is the popular name for a fault in some 2016 to 2018 MacBook Pro models where the thin display flex cables that run through the hinge wear from repeated opening and closing. The backlight then shows uneven bright patches along the bottom edge, called the “stage light” effect, and can eventually fail completely.

How it works

A MacBook’s display connects to the logic board through flat ribbon cables, known as flex cables. On many older MacBooks, these cables could be replaced separately. On the affected MacBook Pro designs, the backlight cables were short and fixed to the display panel. Each time the lid opened, they bent around the hinge. Over months or years, the copper tracks could crack.

The first sign is usually a set of bright and dark “spotlights” along the bottom of the screen, like stage lighting. Often it appears only when the lid is opened past a certain angle. Later, the backlight may cut out as the lid opens wide, and finally the screen stays dark while the Mac otherwise works. An external monitor will still display normally, which helps confirm the diagnosis.

Apple’s service programme

Apple ran a 13-inch MacBook Pro Display Backlight Service Program for certain 13-inch MacBook Pro models showing this backlight fault. As of October 2026, Apple’s support page for that programme states that it has ended, and it no longer appears on Apple’s list of active service programmes. Affected Macs now need a paid repair.

Repair options

OptionWhat to know
Full display assembly replacementReplaces the panel and its cables together. The most complete fix.
Cable-level repairSome repairers rework or extend the damaged cable. It is model-dependent and needs careful skill.
Use an external monitorA stop-gap for a desk-bound Mac, not a repair.

Whichever route you choose, ask for a diagnosis first. A dark screen can also come from a failed panel, a board fault or liquid damage, and each needs a different fix.

What it means for your business

If you still have 2016 to 2018 MacBook Pros in your fleet, they are now ageing devices with no free Apple programme to fall back on. Ask staff to report any bottom-edge glow early, before the screen fails at a bad moment. For each machine, compare the cost of a display repair against a planned replacement, and back up before any repair.

Common questions

Is Apple still fixing Flexgate for free?

No. Apple’s page for the 13-inch MacBook Pro Display Backlight Service Program now says the programme has ended. You can check Apple’s current list of service programmes on support.apple.com for any change.

How do I know if my MacBook Pro has the stage light problem?

Open the lid slowly in a dim room. If uneven bright patches appear along the bottom edge, or the screen goes dark as you open it wider, the backlight cable is a likely cause.

Will it get worse if I keep using it?

Usually, yes. The cable keeps bending each time the lid opens. Opening the lid less wide can buy time, but the fault tends to progress.
