Retina Display

Apple’s name for its high-resolution screens, and the reason a cracked MacBook screen usually means replacing the whole lid.

A Retina display is Apple’s term for a screen with pixels packed so densely that you cannot pick out individual dots at normal viewing distance. On MacBooks, the panel, glass, backlight and cables are built tightly into the lid, so most screen repairs replace the complete display assembly rather than just the glass.

How it works

Every current MacBook Air and MacBook Pro uses a Retina display. To keep the lid thin, Apple layers the LCD or mini-LED panel, the backlight and the cover glass very close together, with little or no gap between them. On many older laptops, a technician could swap just the LCD panel. On most Retina MacBooks, the layers are bonded or tightly fitted into the lid, and separating them without damage is rarely practical.

That is why a “MacBook screen replacement” normally means fitting a full display assembly: the lid with the panel, glass, hinges and display cables already installed. It is more expensive than a glass-only repair, but the result is far more reliable.

Common faults

  • Cracked or pressure-marked screen from a drop, or from closing the lid on a pen or earbuds.
  • Lines, blotches or a black screen from a damaged panel or a failing display cable.
  • Uneven backlight at the bottom edge, often the display flex cable issue known as Flexgate on some 2016 to 2018 MacBook Pro models.
  • Worn anti-reflective coating that looks like patchy stains on the glass.

What affects price and availability

FactorWhy it matters
Exact model numberDisplay assemblies are model-specific. A 13-inch 2020 part will not fit a 13-inch 2022.
Screen typeMini-LED (Liquid Retina XDR) on newer MacBook Pro models costs more than a standard LCD.
Size and colourThe assembly includes the lid, so the colour needs to match.
Part source and ageParts for very new or very old models can be harder to find.
Other damageA drop can also bend the hinge or damage the board. A diagnosis checks for this first.

Apple notes that displays carry factory calibration values that are needed for features such as True Tone to work properly. Ask your repairer how calibration is handled on your model before you approve the job.

What it means for your business

Screen damage is one of the most common reasons a company MacBook goes out of action. Record each Mac’s model number in your asset register so quotes are quick and accurate. Back up before handing a Mac in, and keep a spare or loan machine for key staff. For older Macs, weigh the cost of a new display assembly against replacing the device.

Common questions

Can just the glass be replaced on a MacBook Retina screen?

On most Retina MacBooks, no. The glass and panel are built so closely together that the reliable repair is a full display assembly.

Will I lose my data during a MacBook screen replacement?

A screen replacement does not normally touch the storage. You should still back up first, because any repair carries some risk.

How do I find my MacBook model for a screen quote?

Go to Apple menu > About This Mac. Note the model name and year, for example MacBook Air (M2, 2022). If the screen is unreadable, the model number (A-number) is printed on the underside.
