Signs your laptop hinge needs repair
- The lid won’t stay where you put it. It falls back or flops forward because the hinge has worn loose.
- The hinge is very stiff. You need both hands to open it, or you hear creaking. A stiff hinge puts strain on the mounts.
- The case is lifting or splitting. A gap opens near the hinge, the bezel pops out, or the base near the hinge cracks.
- A clicking or grinding sound. Often a sign that a hinge mount or screw post has broken inside.
- The screen flickers when you move the lid. The display cable runs through the hinge area, and a damaged hinge can pinch or wear it.
- One side has snapped. If the lid hangs from one hinge, stop opening it. The other side and the screen take all the strain.
What we do
Hinge faults are rarely just the hinge. The metal hinge usually survives. What breaks is often the plastic or metal post it’s screwed into. So we open the laptop, look at the whole hinge area and then give you a quote before we do any work.
Inspect first
We check both hinges, the screw mounts in the lid and the base, the bezel and the display cable. You get a quote before any repair starts.
Hinge replacement
If the hinge itself is worn, bent or seized, we replace the hinge set for your model.
Hinge mounts & screw posts
Broken screw posts and mounts can sometimes be rebuilt. Where that won’t hold, we’ll tell you and suggest a cover.
Back cover or base
If the lid cover or bottom case has cracked around the hinge, replacing that cover is often the lasting fix.
Display cable check
If the screen flickers, we check the display cable for wear and replace it if needed.
Screen protection

Until it’s fixed
Open the lid from the middle of the front edge, not from one corner. Don’t force a stiff hinge. If one side has snapped, keep the laptop open on a desk and use an external monitor if you can. Back up your files, as a pinched display cable can stop the screen working altogether.
What affects the cost
We don’t publish a fixed price for hinge repair, because two laptops with the same symptom can need very different work. The main things that change the quote:
- Your model. Some laptops have separate hinges that are easy to reach. On others the hinges are built into the screen assembly.
- Part availability. Hinge sets, lid covers and bases are specific to each model and some are harder to get than others.
- How far the damage has spread. A worn hinge costs less to fix than a broken mount, a cracked lid cover and a damaged display cable together.

On company laptops, hinge damage tends to build up slowly from daily opening and closing in meeting rooms. If several machines of the same model show the same problem, tell us. Still under manufacturer warranty?
Check with the manufacturer or your reseller first. If the laptop is still covered, the repair may cost you nothing, and an independent repair could affect that cover. Company laptops often come with onsite cover, so see next business day warranty and check the service tag or serial number on the maker’s support site. If the warranty has ended, or the damage isn’t covered, we’re happy to help.
Questions people ask
Can a broken hinge be repaired, or does it need replacing?
It depends on what broke. A worn hinge is usually replaced. A broken screw post can sometimes be rebuilt, but if the cover around it has cracked, a new cover lasts longer. We’ll show you what we found and give you the options.
Is it safe to keep using a laptop with a broken hinge?
Not for long. Each time you open it, the strain moves to the other hinge and the screen. Cracked screens and damaged display cables are common results. Keep it open on a desk until it’s fixed.
Will I lose my data?
A hinge repair doesn’t touch your storage, so your files normally stay as they are. Back up before you bring it in anyway. See 3-2-1 backup.
