Signs of water damage in a laptop
- No power after a spill, or it turns on and then shuts off again.
- Sticky, stuck or dead keys, or the trackpad stops clicking.
- Lines, patches or a dark screen after liquid reached the lid or the hinge area.
- Faults that start days or weeks later. Corrosion keeps spreading after the laptop looks dry.
- Charging stops working or the battery drains fast after a spill.
- Smell, heat or crackling. Unplug it and don’t turn it back on.

What we do
Water damage is rarely limited to where the liquid went in. It runs along cables and under chips, and sugar, milk and salt leave residue that keeps causing corrosion. So we open the laptop fully, assess every part, and quote before any repair.
Strip down & assess
We take the laptop apart, check where the liquid reached and test the board, keyboard, screen and battery.
Clean & dry
We clean liquid residue and corrosion from the board and connectors. Drying alone doesn’t remove it.
Board repair

What affects the cost
We don’t publish a fixed price for water damage repair. Every spill is different, and we only know the full picture once the laptop is open. The main things that change the quote:
- What was spilled. Plain water usually does less damage than coffee, tea, soft drinks or sea water.
- How long it has been. The longer residue stays on the board, the further corrosion spreads.
- Which parts were hit. A keyboard alone is a smaller job than a keyboard, board and screen together.

Business laptops & fleets
On company laptops, the data usually matters more than the laptop. If a spill happens, power it off and tell IT straight away. Don’t keep restarting it to check. Many thin laptops have storage soldered to the board, so a board repair can be the way to get files back. Still under manufacturer warranty?
Spills are usually not covered by a standard warranty, but some business and consumer plans include accidental damage. Check with the manufacturer or your reseller first, as an independent repair could affect that cover. Company laptops often come with onsite cover, so see next business day warranty. If it isn’t covered, we’re happy to help.
Questions people ask
Can a water-damaged laptop be fixed?
Often, yes, especially if it was switched off quickly and brought in soon after. Some boards are too corroded to repair well. We’ll tell you honestly after we’ve opened it.
It works fine after drying. Should I still get it checked?
Yes. Residue left inside can cause corrosion that shows up weeks later as a dead keyboard, charging fault or no power. A check and clean now is usually a smaller job than a board repair later.
Will I lose my data?
It depends on the damage. If the laptop still works, back up now. See 3-2-1 backup. If it doesn’t, tell us the files matter and we’ll plan the repair around them.
