We’re an independent repair shop. A MacBook that won’t charge can have a faulty charger, a dirty or worn port, or a fault on the logic board. We find out which before we quote. It’s free to ask for a quote on WhatsApp. Send the model name from Apple menu > About This Mac, the charger you use, and which ports you’ve tried.

Signs of a MacBook charging port fault

  • Not charging with a charger that works on another MacBook.
  • Charging cuts in and out when you move the cable, or only works at one angle.
  • A loose plug that falls out, or a USB-C port that no longer grips.
  • One port works, another doesn’t. On MacBooks with several USB-C ports, try each one.
  • The MagSafe light doesn’t come on, or keeps flashing amber.
  • Heat or a burning smell near the port. Unplug it and stop using it.

Which charging port does your MacBook have?

  • MagSafe 2. The MacBook Air (Early 2015 and 2017) and the Retina MacBook Pro (2015).
  • USB-C only. The 12-inch MacBook (one port), the MacBook Pro from 2016 to 2020, the 13-inch MacBook Pro M1 (2020) and M2 (2022), and the MacBook Air from 2018 to 2020 including the M1.
  • MagSafe 3 plus USB-C. The 14 and 16-inch MacBook Pro from 2021 on, and the MacBook Air from the M2 on. These can also charge through their USB-C ports. See MagSafe explained.

On some MacBooks the ports sit on a small separate board that we can replace. On others they’re part of the logic board, which makes it a board-level repair.

Charger, port or board?

Before you bring it in, try a known-good charger of the right wattage and a different cable. On a MagSafe 3 MacBook, try charging over USB-C. If USB-C works but MagSafe doesn’t, the MagSafe port or cable is the likely cause.

What we do

Test the charger and cable

We test your charger and cable on our bench so you don’t pay for a port you don’t need.

Clean the port

Dust, lint and metal debris build up in ports. MagSafe magnets attract metal bits. Sometimes cleaning is enough.

Replace the port

If the port is worn or broken, we replace it, or the small port board on models that have one.

Charging circuit repair

If the port is fine, we check the charging circuit on the logic board and repair it at board level where we can.

Battery check

A worn battery can look like a charging fault. We check it too. See MacBook battery replacement.

Your data stays put

A port repair doesn’t touch your storage. Board work carries more risk, and we’ll tell you if it’s needed.

What affects the cost

  • Where the fault is. Cleaning a port, replacing a port board and repairing a charging circuit are very different jobs.
  • Your model. Port layout differs between MagSafe 2, USB-C and MagSafe 3 MacBooks.
  • Liquid or a power surge. These can damage parts beyond the port.

Send us your model on WhatsApp for a quote, with a photo of the port if it looks damaged.

Parts and warranty

3-month warranty, OEM parts with original quality. We fit OEM ports and port boards matched to your model, and test charging on every port before you collect.

Before you bring it in

  • Back up. If the MacBook still turns on, run Time Machine or check iCloud has synced. See 3-2-1 backup.
  • Activation Lock. If Find My is on, the MacBook is tied to an Apple Account. We need you, or the account owner, on hand if the Mac asks for it. We don’t bypass Activation Lock.
  • Company MacBooks. If the Mac is managed through MDM, check with your IT team first. See MacBook repair for more on company Macs.

Still under AppleCare? Check with Apple first

If your MacBook is under Apple’s one-year limited warranty or an active AppleCare plan, check with Apple before you book any repair. The fault may be covered, and an independent repair could affect that cover. See Apple’s Mac laptop repair page. If the cover has ended, or the damage isn’t covered, we’re happy to help.

Questions people ask

Is it my charger or my MacBook?

Try a known-good charger and cable of the right wattage. If the MacBook charges with that, it’s the charger. If not, the port or the board is the likely cause.

Can I charge my MacBook with a phone charger?

A low-wattage USB-C charger may charge very slowly, or not keep up while you work. Use a charger with the wattage your MacBook needs.

My Intel MacBook stopped charging. Should I reset the SMC?

It’s worth a try on Intel MacBooks. See how to reset the SMC and NVRAM. Apple silicon MacBooks have no SMC reset.

Will I lose my data?

A port repair doesn’t touch your storage. If the fault is on the board, back up first if the MacBook still turns on.
