Signs your laptop keyboard needs replacing
- Dead keys. One key, a row or a whole block stops working.
- Repeating or ghost keys. A letter types by itself or keeps repeating.
- Sticky or crunchy keys after crumbs, dust or a sticky drink.
- A spill. Switch the laptop off and unplug it. Don’t wait to see if it dries. See liquid damage.
- Missing or broken keycaps, or a backlight that’s patchy or off.
What we do
Not every keyboard fault needs a new keyboard. A driver problem or a loose ribbon cable can look the same. We test first and quote before any work.
Test first
We check the keys in the BIOS or with an external keyboard. If the keys work there, the fault may be software, not the keyboard.
Keyboard swap
On many laptops the keyboard is a separate part held by screws or clips. We replace it on its own.
Top case (palm rest)
On many thin laptops the keyboard is riveted or glued to the palm rest. Then the whole top case is usually replaced. We’ll tell you which type you have.
Ribbon cable & connector
A loose or damaged keyboard cable can kill a block of keys. We check it before replacing anything.
Spills
After a spill we check the board too, not just the keyboard. Liquid can reach the parts under it.
Keycaps & backlight
A single broken keycap can sometimes be replaced. Backlight faults are checked at the same time as the keyboard.
What affects the cost
We don’t publish a fixed price for keyboard replacement. The quote depends on:
- Keyboard or top case. A screwed-in keyboard is a simpler job than a full top case.
- Part availability. Keyboards vary by model, layout and whether they’re backlit.
- Spill damage. If liquid reached the board, that needs checking and may need repair too.

Business laptops & fleets
Company laptops often get keyboard problems from desk spills and heavy daily use. If a keyboard fault turns out to be liquid on the board, we’ll tell you before going further. Check warranty status first (see next business day warranty). Have the BitLocker recovery key ready, and if the laptop has a BIOS password, your IT team will need to enter it for testing. MacBook?

Still under manufacturer warranty?
Check with the manufacturer or your reseller first. If the laptop is still covered, the repair may cost you nothing, and an independent repair could affect that cover. Company laptops often come with onsite cover, so see next business day warranty and check the service tag or serial number on the maker’s support site. If the warranty has ended, or the damage isn’t covered, we’re happy to help.
Questions people ask
Can you replace just one key?
Sometimes. If only the keycap or its clip is broken and a matching part is available, we can replace that key. If the key underneath has failed, the keyboard usually needs replacing.
Can I just use an external keyboard?
Yes, as a stop-gap. But if the fault is from a spill, get it checked soon. Liquid can keep corroding the parts under the keyboard after it looks dry.
Will I lose my data?
A keyboard replacement doesn’t touch your storage, so your files normally stay as they are. Back up before you bring it in anyway. See 3-2-1 backup.
